So the Foxdrill team sprang into action on Monday the 17th of June when a good customer reported a faulty top drive. There seemed to be play on the mainshaft, caused by wear from heavy and intensive use. Main suspect were the mainshaft bearings.
The trailerized rig was transported to the workshop in Schoonebeek for a thorough inspection and diagnosis. Unfortunately, replacing the mainshaft bearings was not going to solve the problem, as Foxdrill's mechanics discovered.
The team dismantled the entire top drive and discovered that several driving parts needed to be replaced. This was a technical challenge, and one that had to be carried out under time pressure. So it was all hands on deck for the mechanics, who immediately went into overdrive to get the job done.
Fortunately, Foxdrill was able to acquire the required replacement parts in a couple of days, so delivery times were not an issue and the parts could be fitted immediately.
During the topdrive overhaul a second team of mechanics carried out maintenance on the remaining part of the rig. This prevented the need to stop operations again for preventive maintenance in the near future.
