Foxdrill team overhauls faulty top drive in record time

What if .... the top drive of a drilling rig breaks down during a drilling operation? And it needs to be repaired as quickly as possible to continue operations? Then it is important to call in the Foxdrill mechanical experts. They know drilling equipment like no other, and they know exactly what it takes to get a complex drilling rig up and running again quickly.

So the Foxdrill team sprang into action on Monday the 17th of June when a good customer reported a faulty top drive. There seemed to be play on the mainshaft, caused by wear from heavy and intensive use. Main suspect were the mainshaft bearings.

Time pressure

The trailerized rig was transported to the workshop in Schoonebeek for a thorough inspection and diagnosis. Unfortunately, replacing the mainshaft bearings was not going to solve the problem, as Foxdrill's mechanics discovered.

The team dismantled the entire top drive and discovered that several driving parts needed to be replaced. This was a technical challenge, and one that had to be carried out under time pressure. So it was all hands on deck for the mechanics, who immediately went into overdrive to get the job done.

Double team effort

Fortunately, Foxdrill was able to acquire the required replacement parts in a couple of days, so delivery times were not an issue and the parts could be fitted immediately.

During the topdrive overhaul a second team of mechanics carried out maintenance on the remaining part of the rig. This prevented the need to stop operations again for preventive maintenance in the near future.

The Foxdrill team managed to complete the entire top drive overhaul within a week and a half. The rig is now running like clockwork and is back in full operation at a drilling site in the Netherlands.
